NOWZ Returns with Digital Single "Achilles" — A Genre Shift into "Gen Z Disco"

NOWZ, which has proven its growth as a "high-end performer" by freely moving between rock, hip-hop, and EDM, is attempting yet another genre transformation with a disco sound. With unrivaled performance and an expanding spectrum taking direct aim at the charts, the group's new challenge is drawing the music industry's attention. Full Activity with the New Single "Achilles" NOWZ (Hyunbin, Yoon, Yeonwoo, Jinhyuk, Siyoon) released its new digital single "Achilles" on the 5th and began full comeback activities. That day, NOWZ also held a comeback showcase at YES24 Live Hall in Seoul's Gwangjin district. The title track "Achilles" reinterprets the funk and disco sound distinctive of the 1980s in NOWZ's own sensibility. It captures the intense pull and flutter of love at first sight, and the confused emotions that bloom within it. Adding refined performance to this, the group completed what's dubbed "Gen Z disco." Member Hyunbin explained the reason for the genre choice: "All the members were born in the 2000s, so we have a lot of interest in older music, and we wanted to show the freshness that comes from a mismatch." This comeback puts forward the concept of "zero sexy," meaning restrained allure. A Growth Streak Carried on Since Rebranding NOWZ debuted in 2024 under the team name "NOWADAYS," then rebranded to "NOWZ" last year, newly establishing the team's identity and direction. Its first mini album "IGNITION," released afterward, surpassed 150,000 in first-week sales, achieving its own career high and proving explosive growth. Billing itself as a "high-end performer," NOWZ won critical praise by handling a range of genres—from the intense rock sound of first mini album title track "EVERGLOW" to the EDM of "HomeRUN" and the hip-hop of "AMMO." As a domestic comeback release, this comes about nine months after last November's single "Play Ball," and five months after it began local activity with its Japanese debut EP "NOWZ" this March. Billboard Selection and Two Consecutive ASEA Wins NOWZ's title track "EVERGLOW" was named on U.S. Billboard's "The 25 Best K-Pop Songs of 2025: Staff Picks." The group also won the "Hot Trend" category at the "Asia Star Entertainer Awards (ASEA)" for two consecutive years, in 2025 and 2026, showing its presence as a global rookie. Its resolve heading into the August comeback showdown—where major senior groups like BIGBANG and ENHYPEN are stepping out in force—was also notable. Hyunbin expressed confidence: "At first I was quite worried about coming out alongside great seniors, but rather than comparing ourselves to others, we decided to compare ourselves to last year's us," adding, "That's how we'll be able to show our own color even more clearly." Widening Points of Contact Through Activity at Home and Abroad The audio and music video for "Achilles" were released at 6 p.m. on release day via various music sites. NOWZ begins its music-show activities by appearing on Mnet's "M Countdown" on the 6th, and will hold a busking event at COEX in Seoul's Gangnam district on the 9th. Beyond this, the group plans to widen its points of contact with global fans through various performances and promotions at home and abroad.
